Meet Kenia Massey, the visionary entrepreneur behind The Black Corner store, the first Black-owned bodega in New Haven, Connecticut. Located at 275 Edgewood Ave, The Black Corner is more than just a typical corner store – it’s a community-driven business that provides a safe and welcoming space for everyone in the neighborhood. This store is the foundation to the neighborhood it’s in.

Prioritizing the Community

Kenia and her husband, Michael, are dedicated to putting their neighborhood and community first. Her passion for serving her community is truly inspiring. The Black Corner provides a variety of products and services, including a safe space for kids to hangout, play video games, and dine-in. The store also provides public Wi-Fi to the community for phone use and internet access, giving back to the community in every way possible.

Kenia and her husband give back to the community in various ways. They give away food to all customers and have clothing giveaways, and offer discounted pop-up access to their kitchen for cooks with aspirations of owning their own commercial kitchen. Recently, they added an Amazon Locker to their store to prevent the loss of packages in their neighborhood. Kenia also hosts women’s events to help women network, recognizing the importance of making connections.

Inspiring Impact

Kenia was inspired to start her own business by her own mother, who had her own business since she got out of high school. Kenia has worked hard to be where she is today, and her ambition and dedication are her driving forces. She envisions opening multiple locations of The Black Corner in other poverty-stricken neighborhoods in the future. “Every hood needs a Black Corner Store that’s not just for them but the people,” says Kenia Massey

Entrepreneurial Spirit and Community Dedication

Kenia Massey’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to her community is truly admirable. Her passion for serving her community has led to the creation of a business that is more than just a store – it’s a safe and welcoming space for everyone in the neighborhood. The Black Corner is a testament to the power of community-driven businesses, and what can be achieved with support from HEDCO.
